What the studies found in rugby players and cyclists

The 2025 pilot study of LactiGo (Beaven and colleagues, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition) gave seven elite male rugby sevens players 10 ml of LactiGo or a placebo ultrasound gel on each leg 45 minutes before 12 six-second cycle sprints.

Hong Kong Baptist University supported the work, and the authors reported no conflict of interest. LactiGo's study page says each player did both gels a week apart and that players, data collectors and analysts did not know which gel was which.

The paper reports peak power (the highest power in a six-second sprint) up 4.1% in sprint 1, with its largest rise, 11.4%, in sprint 10, and no difference in mean power (the average), heart rate or perceived exertion. LactiGo's study page gives other figures.

A 2023 study of a carnosine gel in 15 trained male cyclists, brand not named, found no gain in repeated sprints. LactiGo's study page carries the notice "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration."

Timing around a session: before, during or after

LactiGo's product pages say to apply to clean, dry skin about 30 to 45 minutes before activity, and its Menthol gel page adds after exercise. Its FAQ says at least 45 minutes and its home page FAQ gives 15 to 30 and 30 to 40, so follow the directions on your package.

The 2025 study used cycle sprints, not lifting, so a gym-goer lifting four days a week is outside it. After a session, LactiGo's pages say to apply as part of a cooldown and after the post-activity shower.

Banned-substance testing for athletes who compete
