Quick answerFor more menthol than Biofreeze's 4%, pick Icy Hot's 16% roll-on or Tiger Balm's 11% ointment, both sold through retailers. LactiGo Menthol gel lists 1.25% and suits an athlete who wants a gel sold for training.

Biofreeze alternatives by menthol strength

The Biofreeze alternatives with more menthol than its 4% gel are Icy Hot's 16% roll-on and Tiger Balm's 11% Ultra Strength ointment; LactiGo's Menthol gel lists 1.25% and its Original gel lists none. LactiGo is the only option here with a price on a vendor page: $55.00 for 100 ml of either gel, one-time, as read on 4 October 2026.

Icy Hot: the 16% roll-on

Icy Hot's pain relief roll-on lists menthol 16%, which Icy Hot says is the maximum-strength concentration available over the counter. It comes in 1.5 oz and 2.5 oz sizes and as a 3-pack of the 2.5 oz size, and its page points to stores for prices.

Its label says to ask a doctor before use on children under 12 and reports rare cases of serious burns with products of this type. The label lists conditions by name; this guide names none of them. Pick Icy Hot for the highest menthol strength in the table. LactiGo vs Biofreeze compares the gels directly.

Tiger Balm: ointment and Muscle Rub

Tiger Balm's Ultra Strength ointment lists menthol 11% and camphor 11% and comes in 0.35 oz, 0.63 oz and 1.7 oz. The Muscle Rub cream, 2 oz, lists methyl salicylate 15%, menthol 5% and camphor 3%, and its maker designs it for use before, during and after workouts. Tiger Balm's US site shows no price and sends buyers to retailers.

Tiger Balm's pages say for external use only and use only as directed, and both products say to consult a doctor before use for children 12 or younger. Both pages also say not to use a heating pad. Pick Tiger Balm for menthol with camphor. Icy Hot alternatives covers the same field from the Icy Hot side.

LactiGo: a low-menthol or no-menthol gel sold for training

LactiGo's Menthol gel lists menthol 1.25% and its Original gel lists none; both list carnosine and magnesium sulfate. The 2025 study of the gel, by Beaven and colleagues, was a pilot of seven elite male rugby sevens players supported by Hong Kong Baptist University.

Only the Menthol gel has an over-the-counter drug label on DailyMed, the US drug-label listing; the Original gel has none. Of the products in this table, a guarantee was found only on LactiGo's store: a 30-day money-back guarantee for a first order of one bottle.

Pick LactiGo for a gel sold for training with little or no menthol. The best muscle recovery gel page sets out the wider field and who each option suits.

When to stay with Biofreeze

Stay with Biofreeze for its 4% menthol gel, an 8 fl oz pump, or for its other formats: a 3 fl oz spray, a 3 oz cream jar and a 3 fl oz overnight gel tube.

Its label directs a thin film not more than 3 to 4 times daily and warns that the product is flammable: keep it away from excessive heat or open flame. Biofreeze, Icy Hot and Tiger Balm show no price on their own sites, so only LactiGo's price is given.
