Icy Hot alternatives with less menthol
The Icy Hot alternatives with less menthol than its 16% roll-on are Biofreeze gel at 4%, Tiger Balm Muscle Rub at 5% and LactiGo's gels at 1.25% or none. Icy Hot says 16% is the maximum-strength concentration available over the counter for topical pain relief.
LactiGo's Menthol gel and Original gel are each $55.00 for a 100 ml bottle, one-time, as read on 4 October 2026. Icy Hot, Biofreeze and Tiger Balm show no price on their own sites and are sold through retailers at varying prices, so LactiGo's is the one price in the table.
| Option | Menthol strength | Age and warning lines on its label | Price as read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Icy Hot roll-on (for reference) | 16% | Children under 12: ask a doctor; label mentions rare serious burns | Sold through retailers at varying prices |
| Biofreeze gel | 4% | Flammable; not more than 3 to 4 times daily | Sold through retailers at varying prices |
| Tiger Balm Muscle Rub cream | 5%, with camphor 3% and methyl salicylate 15% | External use only; children 12 or younger: consult a doctor | Sold through retailers at varying prices |
| LactiGo Menthol gel | 1.25% on the product page | Under 2: consult a doctor; not for damaged skin | $55.00 for 100 ml, one-time |
| LactiGo Original gel | None | No drug label found; no warnings text on its page | $55.00 for 100 ml, one-time |
Label lines come from each maker's page or, for LactiGo's Menthol gel, from DailyMed's September 2024 label for the 100 ml bottle.

Shop LactiGo: first-bottle guarantee →Biofreeze: a 4% menthol gel
Biofreeze's Pain Relief Gel lists menthol 4% as its active ingredient and comes as an 8 fl oz pump. Its directions say to rub a thin film over the area not more than 3 to 4 times daily, and the page marks it flammable: keep it away from excessive heat or open flame.
Biofreeze also sells a spray, a cream and an overnight gel, none with a price on its own page. Biofreeze alternatives sets other products against its gel.
Tiger Balm Muscle Rub: menthol with camphor
Tiger Balm Muscle Rub is a 2 oz (60 g) cream that lists three actives: methyl salicylate 15%, menthol 5% and camphor 3%. Tiger Balm says it is designed for use before, during and after workouts, and its directions repeat the application 3 to 4 times daily.
The warnings say not to bandage tightly or use a heating pad, and to consult a doctor before use on children 12 years of age or younger. Tiger Balm's Ultra Strength ointment lists menthol 11% and camphor 11%.
LactiGo: 1.25% menthol or none
LactiGo sells two gels. The Menthol gel lists menthol 1.25% on its product page. The Original gel, which the store also calls Regular, lists none and names nine ingredients, including carnosine (a small protein building block) and magnesium sulfate.
The Menthol gel has an over-the-counter drug label, which sets a product's permitted use and warnings, on DailyMed, the US drug-label listing. Its September 2024 label, which covers the 100 ml bottle, lists 1.25%, says to consult a doctor for children under 2 and says not to apply to wounds or damaged skin. A March 2026 label for a 946 ml pump bottle lists 1.5%, so read the strength on your package.
The Original gel has no drug label on DailyMed, and its store page shows no warnings text. LactiGo's store carries the notice "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration."
LactiGo is the one product in this table with a guarantee found on its pages: a 30-day money-back guarantee on its store pages and, on its refund page, up to two months for first-time one-bottle customers, with shipping not refunded. LactiGo vs Icy Hot sets the label lines side by side.
When to stay with Icy Hot
Stay with Icy Hot if 16% menthol is the strength you want. It is the highest in the table, in a roll-on of 1.5 oz or 2.5 oz. Its label reports rare cases of serious burns with products of this type.
Pick Biofreeze or Tiger Balm Muscle Rub for a lower strength from a retailer, and LactiGo for a gel at 1.25% or with none. No head-to-head study of LactiGo against Icy Hot was found. See the best muscle recovery gel page for LactiGo, PR Lotion and the menthol rubs together.
